In the age of sexting where new acronyms are popping up daily, and emojis are meant to symbolize specific things related to sex and “hooking up”, it can be a full-time job just keeping on top of everything!

The truth is, that youth (and criminals) are always finding new ways to communicate and stay under the radar from adults, their parents (and law enforcement). In some cases, this secret language is even being entered into court cases related to human trafficking!

We are always trying to keep our knowledge fresh, and create tools new for parents and service providers to get a better understanding of what is going on in their kids’ lives. There is an evidenced link between emojis and human trafficking, and we often get asked for quick reference guides for language and these acronyms and emojis. Recently our practicum students put together a list of sexting acronyms and emojis that are often used in the context of advertising in the sex trade, sexting and substance use.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, and it is changing every day! As parents, educators and service providers, it is our responsibility to stay on top of emerging trends and language, so that we can have a better understanding of what is going on in the lives of youth and the culture.

Most of the time emojis are not used on their own, but in combination with each other, so it becomes a bit of a rebus for decoding!
