Native Council of Nova Scotia- Welkaqnik Next Step Shelter

The Native Council of Nova Scotia is the self-governing authority for the large community of Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal peoples residing off-reserve in Nova Scotia throughout traditional Mi’kmaq territory. Our goal is to operate and administer a strong and effective Aboriginal Peoples Representative Organization that serves, advocates and represents our community.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A next step shelter providing survivors of family violence a safe affordable shelter for a period of up to one (1) year.

PROGRAM SUPPORTS: Warm, friendly place of good feeling in the company of other Aboriginal families; Safe and supportive guidance, enabling families to nurture and grow through caring, sharing, helping and understanding; Community Support Counsellor; “Stay Goal Plan”; Referrals.

PARTICIPANT INCLUSION: Indigenous; Victim of family violence; Must qualify through an application intervention process
