The Native Council of Nova Scotia is the self-governing authority for the large community of Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal peoples residing off-reserve in Nova Scotia throughout traditional Mi’kmaq territory. Our goal is to operate and administer a strong and effective Aboriginal Peoples Representative Organization that serves, advocates and represents our community.

Rural Aboriginal Homelessness Program

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Rural Aboriginal Homelessness Program was developed to assist rural off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples who are homeless or at risk for homelessness that currently reside in rural areas of Nova Scotia. Our program objective is to assist individuals and families to locate and sustain safe affordable housing & build partnerships with landlords throughout Nova Scotia.

PROGRAM SUPPORTS: Housing placement; Housing loss prevention; Client support services; Referrals to appropriate systems; Programs and workshops; Advocacy.

Welkaqnik Next Step Shelter

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A next step shelter providing survivors of family violence a safe affordable shelter for a period of up to one (1) year.

PROGRAM SUPPORTS: Warm, friendly place of good feeling in the company of other Aboriginal families; Safe and supportive guidance, enabling families to nurture and grow through caring, sharing, helping and understanding; Community Support Counsellor; “Stay Goal Plan”; Referrals.

PARTICIPANT INCLUSION: Indigenous; Victim of family violence; Must qualify through an application intervention process
