The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Society is a nonprofit, board governed organization that currently operates nine core programs. The mission of the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre is to provide structured, social-based programming for Urban Aboriginal People while serving as a focal point for the urban aboriginal community to gather for a variety of community functions and events.

ABORIGINAL ACADEMIC ACCESS TO POST-SECONDARY (AAAPS)
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Aboriginal Academic Access to Post-Secondary is a program held at the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre in Halifax, in partnership with Mount Saint Vincent University. It is a program designed to help prepare Indigenous learners for University, and explore their options for the future. There are no tuition fees and students will receive university credits for the courses upon completion. This is an 8 month program, running from September to April. Courses will be held Monday- Thursday between the hours of 9:00am-4:00pm, with a very similar style to the way a schedule would be as they transition into University (some days the courses may end at 2, some days they may not start until 10, etc.).

ADULT LEARNING PROGRAM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre’s Adult Learning Program (ALP) is designed for learners of all education levels to attain their high school diploma or GED. The ALP program is a culturally enriched and safe environment for students to learn the skills they need to move forward with their educational and vocational goals. The ALP program is always doing intake for new learners and after doing an initial assessment students may start classes the following Monday.

EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING PROGRAM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Employment & Training Program provides clients access to programs and services that support the development of skills, training, work experiences and ultimately employment. The Employment & Training Program works collaboratively with external businesses, communities, and networks to build and maintain partnerships. The Employment Support Worker (ESW) is responsible for providing career and employment counselling to facilitate and promote employment opportunities for clients. The ESW’s other duties are to assist in Human Resource related administration functions including but not limited to; job posting, job descriptions, pre-screening applications, scheduling and participating in interviews.
